Soho House - Review

AN OUTPOST OF ITS SOUGHT-AFTER namesake in London, Soho House New York is a Manhattan members’ club complete with rooftop pool in the hip-and-happening Meatpacking District.

Firmly aimed at meedja and creative types, Soho House is a corporate-free zone. As one reviewer recently noted, “No fatcat stuffy bankers allowed here!”

Warehouse style, Nth factor cool interiors mix classic with contemporary to stunning effect. Bare brick walls, lavish Swarovski chandeliers, shabby-chic leather chairs and huge beds dressed in Egyptian cotton and piled with pillows are matched by fabulous Manhattan views. The best rooms boast freestanding bathtubs – some with huge mirrors behind – and wet room showers.

Popcorn and technics

Loaded with technics, rooms come with slick sound systems, iPod docks and huge wall-mounted TVs – with complimentary popcorn to munch while you watch a movie. Apple computers await downstairs for guests’ use.

Bedtime is Playtime at Soho House. Three cosy Playpen rooms feature exposed wooden beams and walnut flooring, matched with vast banquettes upholstered in a funky banana leaf print.

Bigger Playrooms sport oversize beds, vintage furniture, a 40 inch TV, hand woven Moroccan rugs and freestanding stone baths. Wonderfully lavish Playhouse rooms are 750 sq ft of glam, with velvet curtains creating a separate living area. Each has a plush seven foot hand carved Baroque style bed, antique chandeliers and walls adorned with specially commissioned collages. You’ll also find lashings of Cowshed body products and some fun toys in the drawers.

Plastic ready for a caning? Opulent 950 sq ft Playground rooms have huge windows and a grand East-West feel – be it Indian, Venetian or French. Completing the look are velvet covered sofas, antique wallpaper and Tibetan rugs. Huge egg-shaped baths for two come complete with eight foot Venetian mirrors.

Tempting though it may be to hole up in your Soho House room, don’t miss out on the roof terrace. With its heated pool flanked by double daybeds and views of the Hudson River, it’s a great place for al fresco breakfasts or cocktails. On cooler nights, play pool or table football, get a pampering in the Cowshed Spa, watch a movie in the screening room or just relax on the 39 ft long Chesterfield sofa in the bar.

Soho House draws a cool and sophisticated crowd. Needless to say the concierge knows how to get guests through the doors of some of Manhattan’s top clubs, while

friendly – and attitude-free – staff are on hand to help ensure you have the best time.
