10 George Street

Your basket is empty

IMAGINE HAVING YOUR OWN boutique bolt-hole in the heart of historic York  – complete with oak panelling, antique chandeliers, roll top baths and a big four poster bed. Just pick up the keys to 10 George Street and this three-bedroom Georgian townhouse is all yours.

This is self catering at its plushest. From the big fluffy towels to the CD library for cosy nights in, 10 George Street has just about everything you’d hope to find in a well-heeled home  – right down to the complimentary wine, fat candles and more. Take the house just for the two of you (there's a minimum two-night stay), or share it with friends.

Expect Something Wicked in the aptly named master bedroom – designed to feel like a lavish opera set. There’s a Tudor-style carved four poster piled with silk and velvet cushions, a free standing roll top bath set beneath vaulted eaves and a huge Renaissance artwork on the walls. Jewel colours ramp up the visual drama, while the bathrobes, flatscreen TV and DVD player will probably turn planned nights out into nights in.

Boudoirs and bathrooms

The lounge at 10 George Street has the air of a gentleman’s club – all oak panelling, comfy leather sofas, well-stocked bookshelves and an open fireplace. A dramatic red and gold ceiling and heavy silk curtains add to the luxe factor.

Dine by candleglow at the refectory-style oak dining table – perfect for an intimate dinner party. French doors lead to a little flower-filled courtyard for al fresco summer suppers – or a lazy Sunday brunch. You can rustle up eats in the fully fitted kitchen.

Should you decide to bring your pals and make a party of it, 10 George Street has two more bedrooms and a second bathroom. Bedroom three (called Tonight, Josephine?) is an opulent Empire style boudoir with lush wall coverings and a coronet-style mahogany sleigh bed with silken drapes, while the bathroom has a deep, deep bath set within a faux leather bookcase, a French console sink and walk-in shower.

Hedonistic Victorian Gothic is everywhere – cut-glass chandeliers, rich fabrics, peacock feathers, decorative eggs and engraved brass fittings. Forget bland magnolia and boring minimalism – this theatrical little York address is made for a lovefest.
