Less well known are the 17th century Treasurer’s House and Castle Museum. For colour rather than high culture, try the York Dungeon or the Jorvik Centre, where Viking days are brought to life.

A wealth of places await out of town: head off for the Yorkshire Dales, the seaside resorts of Scarborough and Whitby or Castle Howard.
