GUESTS ARE WILD about Monachyle Mhor – and it’s not hard to see why. This brilliant boutique retreat hidden amid rugged mountains and lochs in the Trossachs is also one of Scotland’s top dining spots.

Ninety minutes north of Glasgow and four miles down a single track lane that winds along the wooded banks of Loch Voil, Monachyle Mhor couldn’t be in a wilder Scottish setting. We loved the loch-skimming drive from Callander, past hedgerows thick with purple thistles, high mountains and fields of shaggy Highland cattle – with the odd stray sheep ambling along alongside. For an extra frisson of excitement you can even fly in by seaplane, landing in a cloud of spray near the shore.

Set against a tapestry of soaring hills, pink-painted Monachyle Mhor is packed with surprises. Forget the world of trad Trossach tartans – this glamorous boutique bolthole in the Scottish wilds is all contemporary design, new-age comforts and urban-edge dining.

Striking artworks

Run by award-winning chef Tom Lewis and his family, Monachyle Mhor is also a 2,000 acre working farm and the childhood home of siblings Tom, Dick and Melanie. The original 18th century farmhouse and outbuildings have now been converted into stylishly contemporary bedrooms – many set off by Melanie’s modern artworks – while a glass-walled conservatory allows guests to dine while soaking up the surrounding Highland scenery.

Cool urban style mixes effortlessly with antlers, squashy sofas and rustic wood stoves at Monachyle Mhor. Bedrooms are bold and beautiful, making ample use of local slate, wood and stone. Eclectic reclaimed pieces – be it a velvet covered chaise longue, huge mirror, pair of retro lamps or even (in our gorgeous Room 14) polished wheel hubs mounted on the wall – contrast with contemporary pieces to great effect.

Stepping out of such sleek surroundings, it's something of a double-take to find mountain sheep rambling up the lane, ducks wandering through the courtyard and the Lewis's two sociable dogs chasing rabbits on the lawn.

This is a place to kick back and enjoy the hotel's tangibly relaxed vibe, head out for long walks or explore some of the region's ancient relics and ruins. This is the Highlands without a hint of roughing it – and Monachyle Mhor's passionately professional team will help ensure you get the max out of your stay. Take an iPod and some good books and settle in!
