Special features
You'll find a DVD/CD player, eight-channel satellite TV, wi-fi , Egyptian cotton bedlinen, snug quilts and fluffy towelling robes. Four rooms have four poster beds, and most have spa style baths, some of which are big enough for two. All come stocked with luxurious White Company gels and lotions.

For the ultimate in luxe and privacy you'll want to nab The Retreat, whose high-spec credentials include a superking sleigh bed, huge wall-mounted TV and an oversize whirlpool bath for two plus double walk-in shower. Outside there's a patio complete with a fountain and table and chairs.

Our other favourites include Greenburn  – a Mini Suite with a large corner spa bath. You'll also love Meregill and Windergill – Luxury Four Poster rooms with corner spa baths.

Dining In
Gastro style, candlelit dinners are bookable in advance, and specialities include Lakeland fish pie, mushroom, cranberry and brie Wellington and Westmorland lamb. Yummy afters include local ice cream and sticky toffee pudding.

The Howbeck has also partnered up with several local restaurants where guests enjoy dining discounts. There's also an option to indulge in Michelin Star cuisine at sister property Holbeck Ghyll, with its breathtaking Lakeland views and fine gardens. You can also pop over there for afternoon tea or a spa treatment.

Breakfast is served until 9.30am, and guests staying in The Retreat can dine in their suite. The Howbeck's hearty Cumbrian platters have made it an AA Breakfast Award winner. Start the day with Cumberland sausage, bacon, saute potatoes and eggs any style. You'll also find a cold table piled with freshly baked croissants, continental meats and cheeses, and fresh fruit.

Nearby Bowness boasts a range of attractions, including cruises on Lake Windermere, the World of Beatrix Potter and the Windermere Steamboat museum. Also within easy reach are Beatrix Potter's former home Hill Top at Sawrey, Rydal Mount and gardens near Ambleside and William Wordsworth's Dove Cottage in Grasmere.
