Lainston House - Review

SWEEPING INTO THE COURTYARD of Lainston House is a visual treat. Flower-filled archways and loggias frame the entrance of this elegant 17th century country house, set in 63 acres of rolling Hampshire parkland.

With its ruined chapel, pretty dovecote, sundial garden, horse chestnut woods and England’s longest avenue of lime trees, Lainston House enjoys a stunning setting, complete with a lake, herb garden and expansive views across the Hampshire Downs.

Inside, the boutique hotel’s quintessentially English setting and tall sash windows are matched by bold contemporary fabrics and wallpapers, rugged wood floors and velvet armchairs piled with plump cushions. Fires crackled in the fireplace when we arrived on a chill winter's day.
Pillow menu

Well appointed rooms – all with names, not numbers – are individually decorated. Comfort-zone features include hand-made mattresses, duck down duvets and a pillow menu, not to mention calming lavender sleep balm left by your pillow at night.

Swanky suites with oodles of space boast ultra-smart bathrooms with mosaic tiled floors and gleaming chrome fittings. Roomy Deluxe suites come with lavish rainfall showers, two levels or huge four poster beds. Top of the range Exclusive suites ooze extravagance and boast luxury features such as infinity baths, tile TVs or jacuzzi tubs for two.

Watch the sun go down on the terrace (the barman mixes a mean Martini) before sampling some of the culinary treats in store from award-winning chef Andy Mackenzie and his talented brigade in the hotel’s Avenue restaurant.

Stars and presidents alike have all bedded down at Lainston House, and the hotel’s lovely setting has provided a backdrop for many a TV series. Super-helpful staff help make a stay here a rare treat.
