Chic hotel and gastro bar with relaxed vibe

Packed with good-looking gastro-flair, Kesgrave Hall is a grand Suffolk country mansion dating back to 1812 that's now a decidedly cool and contemporary address.

Know It All

Hit the Spot
In parkland grounds on the edge of Ipswich.

Come here for...
• Great gastro fare. • Country surrounds with an urban chic look. • A relaxed and sociable vibe.

There are sweeping grounds to wander through, a buzzy 100-seater restaurant and bar and a wide, canopied terrace for al fresco dining any time of year.

Good to know
Not for those who like fuss and formality.

23 rooms and suites

Special features
Uber-cool bedrooms range from standard through to Principal. All have super-comfy beds, crisp white bedlinen, a minibar, Sky satellite TV and sound system, wi-fi and a tea/coffee tray. Bathrooms feature walk-in showers and great shower products.

Pillow Talk
Deluxe rooms have extra lounging space, while Principal rooms are spacious and special. If you've cash to splash, Rooms 1 and 2 are Kesgrave Hall's signature rooms – both come with plenty of Wow factor (one with a faux leopardskin sofa) and a freestanding rolltop bath in the room. We thought these rooms were simply fantastic and loved the enormous bath and wet room shower.

Eat & Drink

Dining In
There's plenty of theatre in the 100-seater brasserie style restaurant – the open-plan kitchen lets you watch the chefs at work, while brasserie-style menus mean you can eat pretty well anything on the menu all day. Just turn up when you're hungry – Kesgrave Hall has a no-booking policy. It's a lively setting, so not the place for an intimate tete-a-tete.

Head chef Stuart Oliver and his brigade champion all that's great about local Suffolk produce, whether it's smoked haddock fishcakes, potted prawns and smoked salmon or black bream fillets with shallots, girolles and pancetta.

Buffet breakfast is served until 10am, and there's a choice of hot dishes. We loved the flavoursome Suffolk bangers and bacon.

Room service
Available 24 hours.

See & Do
Suffolk's famous Heritage coast is within easy reach. Highlights include the wonderful seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold (famous for its brightly painted beach huts), and Thorpeness, with its rowing lake and teashops. There are also two excellent golf courses just ten minutes from Kesgrave Hall.

Snape Maltings is the place to snap up paintings, jewellery and arty memorabilia, while Woodbridge and Framlingham are a treat for antique trawling and cosy pubs. Ipswich's historic waterfront is now bobbing with yachts and abuzz with restaurants.

Guests get a complimentary pass to use a local gym (two minutes away by car), while spa treatments can be taken at sister hotel Maison Talbooth, 30 minutes away.
