Square Townhouse - Review

BOASTING ALL THE INGREDIENTS for a racy weekend by the sea,  Square Townhouse is set on a seafront Regency square in Brighton's bohemian Kemp Town. Its smartly metropolitan air is matched by a chic little cocktail bar

Square Townhouse is just a hop, skip and a jump from the surf of Brighton beach and the cry of seagulls. A sleek boutique B&B, it boasts handsomely contemporary rooms and a great location just a wave from the waves.

Square’s reception doubles as a bar and lounge, with lots of statement-making white leather banquettes and cube stools, Swarovski chandeliers, modern artworks, glass tables and a huge wall-mounted TV. Sink into a sofa and sip a cocktail or a glass of fizz (Square’s signature tipple is the Brighton Rocks) before heading out on the town later. You can stay up drinking here, post clubbing, till the early hours.

Silver and suede

The ten bedrooms are small but chic. Expect shiny walnut wood floors, walls in white, mushroom or mulberry with splashes of boldly patterned wallpaper, and faux-fur throws lying across crisp white duvets. Suede corner couches, mirrored furniture, exuberant chandeliers, silver flat-screen TVs and perspex seats add style.

Bathrooms are dressed (or undressed) in charcoal slate and chrome. Some even have decadent full-length glass wall panels looking through to the bedroom (not for the modest, perhaps), where you can soak in your double-ended Philippe Stark bath and enjoy sea views with a suitably intoxicating tipple.

Take a King room with sea views for the full Square experience, or hole up below ground in the subterranean reverse penthouse – a huge and decadent pad running the length of the building that comes complete with jacuzzi bath, open fireplace and a sofa-lined lounge perfect for having friends in.

Room 1 has a very different trademark – a vibrating uSpace Well being chair that promises stressed urbanites music, mood lighting and massage in cocoon-like comfort.

Friendly staff, cool surrounds and a top location make Square a cool and indulgent address for a weekend by the sea – though if your must-have list for a hotel includes maids, a restaurant and concierge, look elsewhere. You’re less than an hour from the Big Smoke and yards from the Brighton’s pebbly beaches – just the ticket for an anything-but-square urban escape.
