A trio of beautifully restored wood and stone barns – rustic on the outside but dripping with designer cool inside – Montagne Alternative is a chic Swiss hideaway created by Belgian owner Ludovic Orts. Chunky weathered beams and ancient stone complement the clean, modern lines.

Powder hounds can make the 20-minute hop to the ski mecca of Verbier, go snowshoeing or simply curl up by an open log fire as the snow falls on the village rooftops. There’s a hammam to steam away aching muscles after a day in the great outdoors.

Comfort, space and style

Montagne Alternative is designed for utmost comfort. Elegantly minimalist bedrooms sport bright throws, crisp cotton bedding, natural fabrics and fresh flowers, while bathrooms are a cool collection of sleek chrome and dark slate, stocked with own-brand toiletries scented with Tibetan roseroot.

Vintage designer chairs are counterpointed with cool modern furnishings and locally made wool drapes. Gaze out of the huge windows showcasing stunning views of Mont Blanc and you could be looking at a postcard.

Everything is designed to feel ‘comme à la maison’, and guests can choose whether to be largely self catering or have everything freshly cooked and prepared daily by the chef. A mini-bar is stocked with local produce, including honey made by one of the villagers.
