ARTY AND AVANT GARDE, Dar Sabra is an architect’s dream. Sprawled among the lush greenery of the Palmeraie. this cubist, modernist boutique hotel is now one of the hottest places to stay in Marrakech.

Dar Sabra's cactus-flanked entrance and boldly contemporary style evoke shades of a Santa Fe hacienda at first glance. But this  cool and chic oasis in its intimate, palm-shaded setting is also richly north African. Two acres of tranquil grounds replete with palms, centuries-old olive trees and a vast pool framed by a huge arch set everything off a treat.

The hotel’s 15 lavish suites have plenty of Wow factor, whether you opt for Afghan style, Asian or Art Deco. Others hint at Zen, Indian and African themes. Many have balconies, pillared four-poster beds, huge windows, deep baths and hand-woven rugs.  Coming with friends. There’s also a two-bedroom private villa with private pool.

Showpiece art

Guests at Dar Sabra enjoy top-drawer facilities: there are three outdoor swimming pools (not to mention one indoors), a tennis court, state-of-the-art gym and a spa with hammam. You’ll also find three restaurants, a Moroccan lounge and a cinema. Oh, and several sunny terraces looking across to the snowy Atlas mountains.

Dar Sabra is also something of a contemporary art showpiece. Walls and gardens akin to an outdoor art gallery are set off by modernist sculptures, Pop art, ceramics and ethnic paintings, while a miniature bull stands guard in the manicured grounds. New York's top tag artist was called over to complete the huge mock-graffiti wall behind the main swimming pool.

Dining options include a sweeping outdoor area – perfect for the warmer months – a dining room with cosy hearth or beneath a tented canopy. Menus range from Moroccan to French and Thai. Sip a mojito in the poolside bar or by the crackling fire in the lounge while deciding where to dine.

You’re well away from the big-city hubbub here, and close to the Palmeraie’s three sleek golf courses. The sights and souks of Marrakech are a ten minute taxi ride away.
