We loved the Vanderkiste room – one of the hotel’s Georgian set – with its leafy park views and gorgeous rolltop bath for two.

Dining in the classic yet modern Brasserie One gives you the chance to sample modern Irish cuisine with classic French influences. Go simple with char grilled rib eye, and start with something exotic like the seared fois gras with caramelised apple. There’s an excellent wine list, too.

Explore medieval King Johns’ Castle, take a look at the Georgian House and Garden right next door at No 2 Pery Square or pop into the People’s Park to see its collection of modern Irish art.
Rugby fans will be keen to get tickets to see Munster play at Thomand Park and soak up the atmosphere. There’s plenty of fishing on the River Shannon and golfing not far from town.
