Katikies Hotel - Review

CLINGING TO A CLIFFTOP 300 feet above the azure waters of Santorini’s volcanic caldera, Hotel Katikies could not have a more dramatic setting. This luxury boutique hotel has breathtaking views.

Katikies’ cluster of dazzling white sugar-cube cottages, free-form staircases, wooden bridges and infinity pools makes it one of the most sought-after addresses on Santorini. Honeymooners not surprisingly love this five-star hideaway on the famously scenic Cycladic island.

Set in the village of Oia with postcard-worthy vistas over the Aegean, Katikies has been designed with decadence in mind. That island-in-the-sun feel is underlined with secluded patios, private whirlpool baths and a sundeck with double loungers. Two infinity pools nudge the cliff edge, which tumbles down into the Aegean and the volcanic rocks below.

Even the simplest of Katikies’ 27 immaculate rooms has its own private balcony or terrace framing views of the caldera. Inside, tropical white walls are matched with beamed ceilings, powder blue furnishings, island antiques and every comfort. (Note that very tall people may be challenged by the sloping ceilings in the loft bedrooms). The Honeymoon suite is a corker with a huge terrace, open air dining area, sundeck and outdoor double whirlpool tub..

It’s all about peaceful and understated luxe here. Views are spectacular, and the sunsets – best savoured on your terrace with a chilled glass of vino – are second to none. Like the rest of Santorini, Katikies is built on a cliff, so expect to be doing lots of stair climbing. 

Choose between relaxed poolside eats and fine dining at one of Katikies’ four restaurants. The most sought-after tables – just four of them – are at the candlelit Gourmet roof restaurant with brilliant twinkling views of the caldera. Most guests have breakfast (tailor-made to your tastes) delivered to their terrace. For yet more unwinding, massages can be arranged on request.

Should you tire of gazing at the world’s best views or honing a tan on your sunlounger, the village of Oia has plenty of stylish little bars, beautiful people and boutiques. It can get super-busy when the cruise ships are in but has a great evening passeggiata. 

Katikies staff go out of their way to ensure their guests have the best time, and service here is second-to-none. From the complimentary champagne on arrival, sunset wine tastings, a full concierge service to help you arrange excursions, car rental or water sports and even a cell phone to make free calls to the hotel during your time on the island – this is a top boutique hotel where thoughtful touches abound.  

Katikies’ quiet and intimate seven-roomed villa nearby provides a tranquil alternative to the hotel, with its own private pool.
