MUST SEE, MUST DO
Glamorous getaways may start along the French Riviera, but those in the know soon head inland to seek out the treasures of inland Provence.

Rural Provence - once home to illustrious artits slike Cézanne and Van Gogh - is an altogether different world of stone villages, magnificent Roman remains and purple fields of lavender and herbs. Play pelote with the locals in village squares, knock back a potent glass of pastis with ice in a streetside cafe or fill up on a bowl of local bouillabaisse (fish soup) and know your catch was landed that morning.

Avignon

Fabulous Avignon (Home to the bridge made famous by the ditty "Sur le pont d'Avignon...") is a city of cobbled streets, leafy squares, pretty churches and gorgeous shops. Linger in a pavement cafe, then pause to admire the Palais des Papes, with its soaring spires.

Arles
Famous for its Roman ruins and its associations with Van Gogh, historic Arles remains a star in itself. Great shops, a bustling market and plenty of outdoor cafes add to its charms.

Aix-en-Provence
Elegant Aix is a town of shady boulevards, classic churches and great art  a must-see on any itinerary.

Nîmes
It's worth getting to the old centre of Nimes for its array of classical facades and the amazing Roman amphitheatre. This is also the city where Levi Strauss discovered denim (fabric "de Nîmes").

St Remy-de-Provence
A lively and atmospheric old market town with a huge weekly food market (Thursdays), leafy squares, tiny alleyways and a large complement of appealing bars, restaurants and galleries.

The Luberon
Picturesque villages perched on hilltops characterise the Luberon. Gordes and Menerbes are twwo fine examples of these quintessentially provencal villages.

Les Baux-de-Provence
Old clifftop town with narrow streets and little galleries. Don't miss the Catgedrale d'Images, with its audio visual displays.

Cuisine provençale
Provence is rightly famous for its cuisine provençale, steeped in local herbs. Come here for the word's best bouillabaisse (fish stew) and roast lamb  - accompanied by a fine local wine, of course.
