THE PHEASANT

Convivial Cumbrian inn with scrumptious fare

NO WONDER GUESTS FLY BACK to the Pheasant year after year. This one-time farm became a coaching inn in 1778 and has been a haven of warmth and welcome ever since.

This is a beautifully kept Lakeland hostelry with 40 acres of grounds including a charming small garden. The mellow bar – all oak settles, polished walls, age-blackened wooden beams, gleaming knick-knacks and log fires – has all the patina of a time-warp Lakeland hostelry. Bedrooms are pretty, fresh and filled with flowers, with old pine furniture, soft colours, lovely country fabrics and upmarket bathrooms stocked with quality French smellies.

Chef Malcolm Ennis’s traditional fare flirts agreeably with modern cuisine, and dishes look as good on the plate as they taste. Regulars come here from miles around for dinner, dropping in during the day for scrumptious afternoon teas complete with cucumber sandwiches and more-ish home-baked scones with rum butter

Bedtime
Try the spacious four-postered Ennerdale suite – and snuggle up with tea in bed

Be Savvy
Bracing walks start right from the doorstep, so no excuses!

Be Smitten
Cumbrian conviviality mixed with country-house comfort.

Morning tea in bed

Dine on local Cumbrian specialities with a contemporary twist, such as pan-roasted pheasant and baby vegetables with wild mushrooms. Slumber contentedly, knowing that staff will be happy to bring you early-morning tea in bed when you awaken.

Famous huntsman John Peel was a regular here in the 19th century, and used to recount his exploits in the tap room. We suspect he’d be more than happy to unpeel one of the inviting four-posters here today.
