BROADWAY HOTEL
Tudor Cotswolds coaching inn with indulgent rooms
RELIVE THE AGE of Elizabeth and Essex and all those Errol Flynn-style big screen heroes amid the Tudor timbers of the Broadway Hotel in this famous corner of the Cotswolds.
Of course in Good Queen Bess’s day, bedrooms did not sport contemporary designer touches and almost provençal-style fabrics and colours to set off antique chests with ornate brass handles and crisp white linens.
Great cartwheel chandeliers hang from the high ceilings in the lounge and dining room, and the roaring fire sets off the tone and texture of the old honey stone walls behind comfy sinkable armchairs. Once upon a time, the abbots of Pershore chose this place as a summer retreat, but today’s guests are more self indulgent, whether propping up the cosy bar downstairs, forgetting to count the calories at teatime in the lounge or remembering to draw the curtains against the mullioned windows in the bedroom.
Hit the Spot
In the showpiece Cotswold village of Broadway.
Bedtime
Blow out the candles at your window before sinking into a half-canopied bed.
Be Savvy
Have a sublime (and great value) Sunday here – newspapers, Sunday roast, bed and brekkie.
Be Smitten
A picture-book English village affair.
Vale of Evesham produce
The markets and farms of the Vale of Evesham inspire the chef and fresh flowers from Cotswolds gardens adorn the tables in the Courtyard Restaurant, with its ebony minstrels’ gallery and wooden beams.
The Broadway Hotel was reviewed for Room for Romance by Laurence Phillips
