ORPHEUS ISLAND RESORT
Five-star barefoot chic on a private island in the Great Barrier Reef
THIS TO-DIE-FOR ISLAND ESCAPE on the Great Barrier Reef is a jewel. Guests arrive at Orpheus –
one of the world’s last privately owned island retreats – by seaplane, flying over the islands of the Coral Sea.
Just 42 lucky guests come here to recharge and relax in utterly indulgent style, and you could well
rub shoulders with some A-list celebs. Luxury beachfront quarters are surrounded by lush tropical gardens, and with no telephones, TVs, day trippers, nightclubbers or kids, seclusion is guaranteed.
Before you, palm-fringed bays and glass-clear seas teeming with marine life. Behind you, 1,300 acres of pristine national park. And in your private beachfront abode, everything from a double spa bath and CD player to robes, choccies and Molton Brown toiletries. Dining is a real high point, with sumptuous seven-course degustation menus each evening. The chef will also rustle up a
gourmet seafood hamper for you to explore the many secluded bays dotting the island. This Eden doesn’t come cheap, of course – but do we care?

Starlit showers, seashore dinners
Dining with the Tides is the biz here.
After a starlit shower, wander down to the sea for al fresco dinner on the island’s private jetty as waves lap the shore and the sun goes down.
Be as lazy or as active as you like on Orpheus. You’ll probably just snorkel, eat and laze in a hammock – but you could also zip off in a dinghy, play tennis, go game fishing, or learn to dive.

Dining in
Heart-melting settings don’t come much better than on the pier at Orpheus Island, where dinner is served under a starlit sky. Your ‘Dining with the Tides’ experience features a seven course tasting menu with highlights including scampi grilled with preserved lemons and garlic, and
coriander and garlic confit of Muscovy duckling served with trumpet mushrooms and Parma ham.
Diehard sweet-tooths will adore the shamelessly calorific fried
coconut-crusted Belgian chocolate with a hazelnut liqueur cone. Best of all, all this indulgnce is included in your tariff.
Dining out
There is nowhere else to eat on Orpheus Island, but you definitely won’t want to go anywhere else! Take a tropical picnic hamper with you in the day for lunch on the ocean waves or on a deserted beach.

Orpheus is made for just chilling, but there are plenty of activities on offer to keep you as busy as you want. Included in your tariff are canoeing, water skiiing, snorkelling, outings in a motorised dinghy, guided walks through the island’s national park terrain, fishing, day and night tennis and heaps more. In addition to this you can arrange scuba diving, game fishing, take a tour of the reefs, go tropical fish-feeding, charter a seaplane or go on a cruise on the resort’s own catamaran. Phew.

Snap up a bikini, a book or a beach wrap at the resort’s own boutique.
Spa
A range of spa treatments – from a Wuri Julma massage to Yiri Julaymba spa therapy – will leave you preened and pampered.
