NORTHCOTE MANOR
Wisteria-clad manor that's the cream of north Devon
WELCOME TO RURAL North Devon. A long driveway climbs up through 20 acres of woods, gardens and lawns to wisteria-clad Northcote Manor – a handsome, mellow-stoned Georgian pile in an idyllic woodland setting.
Expectations of country-house peace and deep comforts are about to be realised – and how. Walk past the studded oak door of this romantic Devon hotel and a zesty yellow hallway leads you inside to polished wood floors with rugs, drop-in sofas, books, flowers and a crackling fire. A striking backdrop of hand-painted murals in the drawing room and dining room highlight the manor’s associations with Tavistock Abbey a thousand years ago.
After leisurely pre-dinner drinks by the fire we sailed into the restaurant, all glowing in pinky-peachy shades and impeccably set up for chef Richie Herkes' prize-winning cuisine. Huge murals along the walls tell the story of some of the manor's recent history.
Hit the Spot
Tucked into a wooded hilliside near Umberleigh.
Bedtime
We loved the huge jacuzzi bath in the Manor suite.
Be Savvy
Book an aromatherapy treatment in your room – there's a therapist on standby.
Be Smitten
It's the cream of north Devon.
Going gourmet
Go gourmet here, with winners such as seared king scallops, Cornish turbot fillet, and caramelised apricots with panna cotta (sheer indulgence). The chef's versatility also includes excellent wedding banquets (the hotel can be hired exclusively for nuptials), while the Dine & Recline option allows those coming here for dinner to enjoy and imbibe with unhurried relish, then slip upstairs and stay over with a half-bottle of champers.
Individually designed bedrooms pile on the rich country comforts, with floral fabrics, cosy lamps and meticulous attention to detail. Shiny bathrooms stocked with fluffy robes and toiletries come with good size baths. The Manor suite has a jacuzzi and an oriental vibe, while Orchard enjoys valley views and a window table for just-out-of-bed breakfasts.
Staff at this luxury Devon hotel are adept at putting guests at ease, while for deep-down unwinding you can book an in-house aromatherapy and beauty treatments, or head outdoors for golf, tennis, fishing, racing and croquet.
