JACOB'S CREEK RETREAT
Relaxed country homestead on the banks of Jacob's Creek
RETREAT IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTION for Jacob's Creek – you’ll feel
far from the madding crowds here in the Barossa Valley. Yet you’re in the heart of one of Australia’s best known wine regions – and the outstanding wines produced here probably adorn your own wine rack at home.
Surrounded by a patchwork of green and gold hills, terraced grapevines and olive trees, Jacob's Creek Retreat is
a cluster of simple, blue-stone cottages dating back to the 1840s (that’s old hereabouts.) The original winery buildings by the banks of historic Jacob’s Creek have been restored so their rustic charm shines through modern fittings.
Wooden floors, log fires, sunny verandahs and country-style antiques sit comfortably with inviting spa baths, TVs (as if you’ll even notice them) and air-conditioning (which you’ll definitely notice in those toasty Barossa summers).
Each of the five cottage suites at Jacob's Creek has a private garden and a French-style courtyard, while the scented rose gardens (popular for summer weddings) are just a whiff away. Expect fuss-free, relaxed country-style Aussie hospitality here. They provide the setting – you do the fussing.
Hit the spot
Just outside Tanunda, 50 minutes north of Adelaide.
Bedtime
Lose yourself (but not your partner) in kingsize beds with fluffy feather quilts.
Be savvy
It helps to be a wine lover.
Be smitten
Rustic to the max, with a mellow finish.
Kookaburras by the creek
Pathways meander among manicured lawns and secret courtyards shaded by pencil pines and olive trees. Stroll along Jacob's Creek itself and
hear the kookaburras laughing in the gum trees. And don’t miss the eight-course dégustation menu cooked by owner chefs Wyndham and Patricia House, and partnered (naturally) with great wines.

Naturally you’ll find plenty of Jacob’s Creek vintages on hand as accompaniments.

What’s cooking?
It’s a surprise! Book ahead, and your hosts will prepare a surprise dinner tailored to your tastebuds. A good Shiraz from the estate should wash it down nicely.
Top table?
An intimate table in the garden, surrounded by the magnificent red gums.
See & Do
You’ll find plenty of historic villages in the Barossa, with roots going back to the early settlers. Most retain a historic flavour and – reflecting the origins of immigrant colonies – you’ll find some great German bakeries and sausage shops. Of course the area is famous above all else for wine. There are over 50 wineries hereabouts – most of them open for tastings.
Shop
Go on a tasting tour and stock up with a star vintage to take home. There are also scores of antique shops piled with curios and early settler memorabilia.
After dark
Follow an al fresco dinner with a fine oak-aged dessert wine and a stroll in the rose gardens. Or check out one of the regular Jacob's Creek jazz evenings, which are huge fun.
Dates
Easter (bi-annually)
It’s one big party at the Barossa Vintage Festival: barrel tastings, picnics, a balloon burn and dozens of heritage events. All washed down with gallons of wine, of course.
