Velvets and silk

Gilded mirrors and eclectic artworks are set against rough-stone walls and exposed brickwork. Rustic-hewn wood tables contrast with sleek new technology, while soft pastels counterpoint clean, crisp lines. Velvet couches, tumbling silk drapes, huge 3m wide paintings above the bed (some Renaissance style, some abstract florals) and granite and glass bathrooms vamp up the style factor. Window shades made up of coloured glass balls scatter rooms with a rainbow of light and reflections.

Neri Hotel’s plush and spacious bedrooms are the perfect invitation to draw the drapes, uncork the Cava and stretch out on your huge bed. There’s a choice of bedding and pillows, fluffy towels and robes, and extra touches like candles and incense in the minibar. Some rooms have a balcony or private terrace, and junior suites have sleek granite bathrooms with slate tubs, double basins and walk-in drench showers.

Downstairs, you’ll find intimate lounge areas and a little library where you can catch up with the day’s papers or use the hotel laptop. Upstairs, you’ll find a leafy roof terrace – a real plus in the Gothic quarter – complete with cushions, sun loungers and a shower for cooling off. Set among the ancient rooftops of the old town, it’s the perfect place to while away the siesta or sunset hours with a cocktail.

Don’t miss dinner at Neri Hotel’s highly rated restaurant, overlooking the square and romantically set among the building’s original stone arches. Look forward to modish Catalan cuisine with an Arab twist.

Service at the Neri is unfailingly warm, welcoming and friendly. Not surprisingly, this dazzling little hideaway hotel is a favourite with celebs  – previous guests include Woody Allen and actor John Malkovich. And while it’s not cheap, it’s the kind of place where we’d always be happy to splurge.

See & Do

Fabulous churches and museums are all part of Barcelona’s cultural fizz. Gaudi’s great unfinished masterwork Sagrada Familia, the extraordinary Casa Batllo house and the weird stone structures of Guell park are unmissable.

You’ll want to wander along the world-famous promenade Las Ramblas, as well as exploring the winding streets and corners of the Gothic quarter.  You can rent an electric Ecobike at Neri Hotel to get around the city.

If the seaside beckons, head for the city’s own beach at Barceloneta or take the train to the seaside ton of Sitges, less than an hour away by train. You’ll find plenty of seafood bars and restaurants there for an alfresco lunch.

Shop

Fashionistas can admire the big names lining glitzy Passeig di Gracia – pausing for some tapas in one of the many outdoor cafes – while the side streets off Las Ramblas offer a wealth of one-of-a-kind stores selling books, art and collectibles. You’ll find plenty of curios in the antique emporiums of Avinyo street, while the Bouqueria food market – Europe’s biggest – is a must-see. For something of everything, check out the department store El Corte Ingles.

After dark
Night time is the big time here, and you can sip designer cocktails and nibble on delicious eats at the Neri. There’s an awesome array of places to try in town, and locals often opt for a promenade (paseo) in the evening cool, followed by a couple of hours in the city’s tascas (taverns). Watch the world go by in Plaça del Sol in Gracia, Plaça del Pi in the old town or one of the other pleasant squares.

Barcelona’s club scene comes alive after midnight, so be ready for a late-late stint.  Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter are the city’s big nightlife centres.
