CASA CLELIA

Comfort-rich country farmhouse near Bergamo

A NARROW COUNTRY ROAD winds up to Casa Clelia. This rustic 17th century manor house – a former medieval convent – is tucked into the hills not far from Bergamo. There’s a farm alongside with a kitchen garden, stables and gaggles of geese, and the warmest welcome from owner Rosanna.

Inside Casa Clelia you'll find old wooden dressers laden with home-made jams, gleaming vegetables in oil, hams and salami in the entrance hall. A huge stone fireplace is the centrepiece of the rustic Il Camino restaurant, whose exposed stonework, barrel vaults and wood floors makes an inviting setting for candlelit dinners.

Each of Casa Clelia's ample bedrooms has a painted motif on the door (no anonymous room numbers here), with polished wood floors, open beams, stonework and bright splashes of colour. Eco-friendliness is a top priority, and heating comes from wood-burning stoves and solar panels, while jute panelling ensures – should ardour get the better of you – good sound proofing. Roomy bathrooms, some with roll-top baths and huge basins, are stylish and softly lit.

Eco-friendly farmhouse

Look forward to flavoursome home-cooked organic food. We dined on asparagus risotto, roasted vegetables and delicious, crusty home-made bread.

Stroll beneath wisteria and jasmine in Casa Clelia's gardens and listen to the rustlings of nature in the acres of orchards and woods. There’s riding and cycling nearby, and plenty of fresh air for country guys and gals.
