You can't beat winter amid the soaring peaks of this scenic corner of Britain, says Clare Baranowski.

YOU CAN'T BEAT the Lake District out of season. Winter here can be pure magic, with snow lacing the fells, lake shores cloaked in mist, and – if you’re staying one of our fab romantic hotels – toasty log fires crackling indoors

Summer crowds have melted away, leaving empty roads and hillsides dotted with rugged sheep interlaced with a picture-worthy patchwork of water and woodlands.  It’s all clean, green and scenic – even if the weather is notoriously fickle!

The Lake District is rife with literary connections. Visitors flock here each year to soak up the landscapes that inspired William Wordsworth,  Beatrix Potter and scores of other writers, painters and poets.
